SHOULD THE MLS HAVE PROMOTION AND RELEGATION?

THE MAJOR SOCCER LEAGUE IS A SOCCER LEAGUE THAT HAS TEAMS IN THE US AND CANADA. THE MLS WAS VERY DIFFERENT FROM OTHER LEAGUES AROUND THE WORLD. THE DIFFERENCES INCLUDE HAVING PLAYOFFS, A DRAFT, AS WELL AS 2 DIVISIONS IN ONE LEAGUE BROKEN UP IN EAST AND WEST. THE ONE HUGE DIFFERENCE IS THERE IS NO PROMOTION AND RELEGATION. SO SHOULD THE MLS HAVE PROMOTION AND RELEGATION.
PROMOTION AND RELEGATION IS A SYSTEM THAT EVERY LEAGUE USES OTHER THAN THE MLS (AND THE A-LEAGUE IN AUSTRALIA). PROMOTION AND RELEGATION ALLOWS TEAMS FROM DIFFERENT DIVISIONS TO CHANGE FROM LEAGUE TO LEAGUE DEPENDING ON HOW WELL THEY DO. LIKE IN THE ENGLISH LEAGUE SYSTEM, THE TOP TWO TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE AT THE END OF THE SEASON ARE AUTOMATICALLY PROMOTED TO THE NEXT DIVISION. THE 3RD THROUGH 6TH PLACE TEAMS ARE PUT IN A PLAYOFF, AND THE WINNER IS PROMOTED AS WELL. THE LAST 3 TEAMS IN THE DIVISION GO DOWN TO THE LOWER DIVISION/LEAGUE.

THE LEAGUE SYSTEM IN THE US DOES NOT HAVE PROMOTION AND RELEGATION SO THE TEAMS STAY IN THE SAME LEAGUE NO MATTER HOW GOOD OR BAD THEY DO. THE MLS IS CONSIDERED FIRST DIVISION, NASL IS SECOND DIVISION, AND THE USL IS THIRD DIVISION. THE ARGUMENT MOST PEOPLE SAY THEY DO NOT WANT PROMOTION AND RELEGATION BECAUSE THEY SAY TOO MUCH MONEY WILL BE LOST. THE COMMISSIONER OF THE MLS SAID, "IF YOU'RE INVESTING BILLIONS AND BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, WHICH WE ARE NOW AT ABOUT $3.5 BILLION INVESTED (IN MLS) IN 20 YEARS, TO BUILD SOMETHING IN KANSAS CITY AND THEY HAVE A (CRAPPY) SEASON, TO THINK THEY MIGHT BE PLAYING IN CHATTANOOGA IN A STADIUM OF 4,000 PEOPLE ON A CRAPPY FIELD WITH NO FANS, MAKES NO SENSE" (GOAL.COM). THE PROBLEM WITH THIS ARGUMENT IS THAT IT IS NOT ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE FIELD, BUT IT IS ABOUT THE QUALITY OF SOCCER. THE COMMISSIONER’S STATEMENT MAKES ME MAD AS A SOCCER FAN THAT SUPPORTS A TEAM FROM A LOWER DIVISION. I BELIEVE IF A TEAM IS GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY TOP TEAMS THEN THEY DESERVE TO PLAY THOSE TEAMS.

IN MY POINT OF VIEW I SEE PROMOTION AND RELEGATION AS A GOOD IDEA. PROMOTION AND RELEGATION MAKES TEAMS WORK FOR THEIR SPOT, WHICH WOULD MAKE THE MLS AND US SOCCER MUCH MORE COMPETITIVE AND IT WOULD GIVE A BETTER ATMOSPHERE DURING GAMES. THE EXCITEMENT OF A PROMOTION AND RELEGATION BATTLE WOULD MAKE THE LEAGUE MUCH MORE WATCHABLE. THE MORE INTERESTING THE MAJOR SOCCER LEAGUE IS THE MORE PEOPLE WANT TO WATCH IT, AND THE MORE PEOPLE WATCH IT THE MORE THE LEAGUE GROWS IN PROFIT.  WITHOUT PROMOTION AND RELEGATION IT MAKES TEAMS COMPLACENT, BUT WITH IT TEAMS WOULD WORK HARDER AND WANT MORE FROM THEIR SEASON. THE THING THAT I REALLY LIKE ABOUT PROMOTION AND RELEGATION IT CAN TURN RAGS TO RICHES. IF YOU LOOK AT THE ENGLISH FOOTBALL SYSTEM YOU SEE TEAMS FROM LOWER LEAGUE TEAMS WORKING THEIR WAY TO THE TOP. A PERFECT EXAMPLE IS AFC BOURNEMOUTH AND HOW THEY WERE IN LEAGUE ONE IN 2010 (THE THIRD DIVISION IN ENGLAND) BUT WORKED THEIR WAY UP TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE IN 2015 (WWW.TELEGRAPH.CO.UK). I WISH THAT HERE IN THE US TEAMS FROM THE NASL OR USL COULD ONE DAY PLAY IN THE MLS. TEAMS THAT WORK HARDER IN THE LOWER LEAGUES SHOULD BE REWARDED IF THEY GET TO THE TOP OF THERE LEAGUES. I UNDERSTAND THAT TEAMS AND THE LEAGUE WILL LOSE MONEY IF RELEGATED. IF YOU DON’T WANT TO LOSE MONEY AND GET RELEGATED THEN WIN GAMES! EVERY TEAM NEEDS TO EARN THEIR SPOT IN THE LEAGUE. THE ONE THING I HATE IS EXPANSION TEAMS WHO CAN JUST JOIN ANY LEAGUE THEY WANT WITHOUT HAVING TO WORK THEIR WAY UP LEAGUE BY LEAGUE. WHEN EXPANSION TEAMS THAT JUST COME UP THEY AUTOMATICALLY GET A SPOT IN THE MLS. WHEN TEAMS IN THE OTHER LEAGUES LIKE THE NASL AND USL HAVE BEEN THERE FOREVER WITHOUT ANY TYPE OF REAL REWARD (LIKE PROMOTION). WITH PROMOTION AND RELEGATION TEAMS DON’T JUST GET A SPOT BECAUSE THEY HAVE MONEY BUT GET A SPOT BECAUSE THEY ARE GOOD. PROMOTION AND RELEGATION WILL IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE MLS BECAUSE THE TOP TEAMS WILL BE IN THE TOP LEAGUE. THE US NEEDS RELEGATION AND PROMOTION IF THEY EVER WANT TO TAKE A BIGGER STEP TO BECOMING A WORLD SUPER POWER IN SOCCER.

THE US COACH JURGEN KLINSMANN SAID AFTER BEING TOLD WHAT HE THINKS ABOUT PROMOTION AND RELEGATION "THAT FURTHERS OUR NATIONAL TEAM," KLINSMANN TOLD THE RHEINISCHE POST. "SOMETHING IS AT STAKE WEEK IN, WEEK OUT. BE IT AT THE TOP OR AT THE BOTTOM, YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO PERFORM. THIS THRILL OF THE RELEGATION BATTLE IS NON-EXISTENT IN THE U.S. LEAGUE."  "THE RISK FOR CLUB INVESTORS TO ALL OF A SUDDEN PLAY IN THE SECOND LEAGUE WOULD BE TOO HIGH," HE SAID IN THE SAME INTERVIEW. "BUT THE SPORTING SIDE WOULD BENEFIT FROM IT." (SOURCE-ESPNFC.US) EVEN THE US COACH AGREES THAT PROMOTION AND RELEGATION WOULD HELP IMPROVE SOCCER IN THE US AND THE MLS.

THE MAJOR SOCCER LEAGUE MAY NEVER GET PROMOTION AND RELEGATION. AND IF THEY DO NOT EVER GET IT THEY WILL NEVER REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL AS A SOCCER LEAGUE. BUT IF THEY DO GET PROMOTION AND RELEGATION THE QUALITY OF SOCCER TEAMS, THE EXCITEMENT OF THE LEAGUE, THE AMOUNT OF SUPPORT, AND THE GROWTH OF THE LEAGUE WILL ALL INCREASE ENORMOUSLY. THIS SYSTEM ISN’T MYTH IT TRULY WORKS LOOK AT ALL THE TOP LEAGUES IN THE WORLD. THE MLS NEEDS TO CHANGE IF THEY EVER WANT TO COMPARE THEMSELVES WITH THE BEST LEAGUES IN THE WORLD.
